BPD Make Second Homicide Arrest This Week

Buffalo police have cleared a homicide case from last year, with an arrest, for the second time this week.

On May 19th, 2012 at around 1:45 pm a gunman shot and killed 18 year old Shaquille R. Woods of Buffalo.

The shooting occurred at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Shields Avenue on the city's west side. The victim was talking to the occupants of a vehicle, when a male got out of the vehicle and shot Woods in the stomach. Woods was rushed to Buffalo General Hospital by ambulance, where he expired from his wounds.

Late Thursday morning Homicide Squad detectives charged Demario L. Smith, 25 with a single count of murder in the second degree, by Homicide Squad Detective Christopher Sterlace. Assisting in the investigation leading up to the arrest were Detectives Jeff R. Weyand, Scott R. Malec, Brian G. Ross and Patricia Wrest. Smith is currently at the Erie County Holding Center, awaiting further court appearances.

Earlier this week, on Monday, Homicide Squad Detectives James Lema and Salvatore Valvo charged Laquann Morgan, 21, in connection with the murder of Adrian L. Huggins Jr. Huggins was gunned down January 8, 2012 and died as a result of his injuries ten days later at Erie County Medical Center.
