Mayor Brown, BPD Announce Arrest in Death of 5-year-old boy

Arrested

Mayor Byron Brown and Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda announced today the arrest of 26-year-old Matthew Kuzdzal in connection with the death of 5-year-old Eain Brooks.

Homicide Detectives have charged Kuzdzal, the boyfriend of the victim’s mother, with murder in the second degree.

An autopsy performed by Erie County medical examiners listed the cause of death as blunt force trauma.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of Eain Brooks,” said Mayor Brown. “This is an unspeakable crime. I thank the Buffalo Police Department and our detectives for making a quick arrest.”

Buffalo Police initially responded to a call at an apartment in the 100 block of Albany Street Sunday night September 15th just after 7:30 PM. The boy was taken to Women and Children’s Hospital where he later died.

“Homicide detectives moved quickly to piece together this tragedy, culminating in the arrest of the defendant,” said Commissioner Derenda.

Leading the investigation was Detective Sergeant James P. Lonergan, assisted by Detectives Reginald Minor, James A. Lema, Salvatore A Valvo, Christopher F. Sterlace and Jeff R. Weyand.
