Brown announced more arrests today in Buffalo’s continuing crackdown on illegal drug use in the city. Just days after over 60 people were arrested in a city-wide round up called “Operation Power Sweep”; Buffalo police arrested 7 more individuals including four University of Buffalo students following a weekend detail in the University Heights area. Mayor Brown said, “As I’ve said we will not let up when it comes to illegal drug activity in our city. This is just the latest example. I want to commend Northeast District Chief Kimberly Beaty and the excellent police work by the officers involved”. Over the week-end, Buffalo police added more patrols to the University Heights area following incidents of student rowdiness that led to several students being injured. Besides the 7 arrests, police seized quantities of cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana and other pills plus $64,000 in cash. Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda said, “We believe that individuals were selling and distributing large amounts of illegal drugs from this West Northup residence. Earlier in the evening officers came across an illegally parked car out in front of house. The officers asked the driver to move his vehicle. Police then returned about an hour later and the vehicle was still illegally parked. That’s when officers walked into the yard and then discovered large amounts of drugs in plain view in the house”. Northeast district officers Roberto Becerril and Christina Colosimo are credited with making the arrests. Those arrested all face felony drug charges. Mayor Brown added, “This should be another warning that we are out in full force and conducting all types of different operations at different times in different parts of the city”.
