Charges Upgraded in Fatal Guilford Street Shooting

February-2-2012 — Joshua Mitchell has now been charged with murder in the second degree, for the homicide of Brian G. Chapman Jr. early yesterday morning.

Chapman had been on his porch on Guilford Street, waiting for a ride to work, when he was gunned down. Mitchell faced City Court Judge James A. W. McLeod today, to answer his charges, and was remanded to the Erie County Holding Center.

His next court appearance is scheduled for February 7th, in the afternoon. The quick actions of a Buffalo police officer, Dennis R. Gilbert led to the suspect, who was in the back seat of a gray Saturn Ion. The officer had heard several gunshots and linked the vehicle with the shooting scene.
A weapon was recovered and tested, which police now believe was the .38 caliber handgun used in the murder of Chapman.
