7 Promoted by BPD

Mayor Byron W. Brown and Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda announced the promotion of seven individuals at a ceremony held on Friday, June 17th.

A large gathering of family, friends and co-workers attended the early afternoon event held in the second floor academy at Buffalo Police Headquarters on Franklin Street.

Commissioner Derenda issued the oath of office to four new lieutenants and three new detectives.

Promoted to the rank of lieutenant were: Officers Melinda M. Jones, Sean P. Phillips, Thomas R. Whelan and Aaron V. Young.

Promoted to the rank of detective were: Officers William J. Gambino, Mark K. Locicero and Vatasha L. Tibbs-Watkins.

Mayor Brown congratulated the seven and said they will strengthen a department that already totals over 740 officers.

Through nearly the first six months of 2011, unofficial statistics show that overall crime in the city is down 8% from last year at the same time, violent crime is down 18% and homicides almost 25%.
