BPD Make Arrest in Bike Path Homicide

Alert Police Officer Spots Suspects

Buffalo Police Homicide Detectives have arrested two individuals in connection with the November 2009 slaying of 17 year old Ruel Cotto.

Detectives have arrested 18 year old Eric Batherson of Gold Street in the city and charged him with murder in the 2nd degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the 2nd degree.

Police also arrested 20 year old Alex Oliveras of multiple addresses and charged him with criminal possession of a weapon in the 2nd degree.

Authorities say that Cotto’s body was found by a passerby on the morning of November 14th on the Scajaquada Bike Path near Grant and Amherst Streets.

Chief of Detectives Dennis J. Richards said the two individuals had been developed as “persons of interest” in the case by homicide detectives.

Richards added that police were on the lookout for the two suspects, “when Northwest District Officer Amy Frankel spotted the two entering a vehicle on Kail Street overnight”.

Batherson and Oliveras were taken to police headquarters for questioning. The two were subsequently arrested at approximately 5:30am Thursday morning for their roles in the shooting death of Cotto.

Homicide Squad Detective Sgt. James P. Lonergan led the investigation. He was assisted by Detectives James A. Lema, Reginald Minor and Scott Malec.
