Home » Press Releases » 2009 News Archive » Updated Information for Scheduled Funerals of Two Fallen Buffalo Fire Fight Updated Information for Scheduled Funerals of Two Fallen Buffalo Fire FightersBUFFALO — Below is preliminary media information regarding Friday’s funerals at St. Joseph Cathedral in downtown Buffalo: The family of Lt. Charles “Chip” McCarthy has requested that there be no media inside St. Joseph Cathedral for Friday morning’s funeral. The family of Firefighter Jonathan Croom has agreed to a pool feed for television – one camera – and a single pool photographer for print. Pool designations will be forthcoming from the Diocese of Buffalo. For the funeral of Firefighter Croom, media will be seated in the first three pews on the right hand side of the cathedral where the mult-box is located. Reporters are not to walk around the cathedral during the funeral. Following each funeral service, we will provide various personnel for interviews at the designated media location at Church and Franklin Streets (e.g. Commissioner Lombardo, Mayor Brown and clergy). Because of the large number of firefighters and other first responders who will be outside the cathedral during both funeral services, we are attempting to set up a public address system, which will feed audio outside the cathedral. As always, we ask that you respect the wishes of the families of the fallen firefighters during their difficult time of loss. We also ask that media working inside the cathedral dress accordingly to respect the dignity of the cathedral (no blue jeans, no t-shirts). The use of electronic devices, including cell phones, pagers and laptops, is prohibited in St. Joseph Cathedral. Also, please note that the proper name of the cathedral is St. Joseph Cathedral, not St. Joseph’s Cathedral or St. Joseph’s Old Cathedral as has been reported in the last two days. No Parking ZoneFriday, August 28th from 5:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. areas in and around St. Joseph Cathedral on Franklin Street will be closed off with no access, including:
All commuters coming into downtown Buffalo should be aware of this temporary no access zone and make alternate plans to access their place of work or destination. In addition, please be aware that there will be a significant increase of vehicles parking in this general area. Media AccessWith the no access zone established around St. Joseph Cathedral, all accredited media must enter the zone at Delaware Avenue and Church Street. They will be directed to the media zone on Franklin Street just north of Church Street. The designated media area is the northeast corner of Church Street and Franklin Street 6:00 a.m. — Live television trucks must arrive (and will be assembled along Franklin Street north of Church Street) 8:30 a.m. — All accredited media must be in place at designated media area.
