BPD Release Overtime Costs for Canisius College Event

The Buffalo Police Department released its overtime costs in connection with the May 2nd Spring Fest event at Canisius College. The Buffalo Police Department spent $32,305.00 in overtime to make sure the event went off without incident.

The Department added significantly more Officers for this year's event after the last two Spring Fest events were marred with large fights, property damage to residents who live in the area, underage drinking, drinking in public, loud music, unruly behavior, streets impassable to vehicular traffic and trash everywhere.

As the Department has stated before, if needed, money would be spent to ensure public safety in the City of Buffalo. The Department spent almost $33,000.00 in overtime for this year's St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Deputy Commissioner Daniel Derenda said the Department added extra manpower to this year's Spring Fest event at Canisius after meeting with community leaders in the Hamlin Park area. The Department then met with public safety and administrative officials at Canisius College.

It should be noted that Spring Fest '08 occurred without any serious incident. One individual was arrested for trespassing and the BPD issued 35 summonses. It also should be noted, that the College sponsored event has not been the issue. Most of the incidents in the past have occurred in off - campus housing, in and around the Hamlin Park area.

The Buffalo Police Department thanks officials, staff and students at Canisius College for making this year's Spring Fest safe.
