BPD Arrest Suspect in Murder Case

Buffalo Police identified the victim of the city's latest homicide, Wednesday and made an arrest within twenty four hours of the body's discovery.

Tuesday afternoon, homicide investigators acting on a tip, were led to the lower apartment at 101 1/2 Chenango Ave., and found the apparently murdered victim, 43 year old Kevin Smith. Tuesday night Homicide investigators issued a pick up order for Dennis Ray Washington, 46, who had been known to stay at various Buffalo and Niagara Falls addresses. "Some very alert Niagara Falls police officers located the suspect in that city this morning, and took him into custody for the Buffalo police," said Chief of Detectives Dennis J. Richards.

This is the city's thirteenth homicide this year.

An autopsy was conducted earlier today, to determine the cause of death of the victim. Smith suffered multiple blows to the head and numerous stab wounds.

Washington faces counts of murder in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon.

Sgt. Daniel Rinaldo and Detectives Mary Gugliuzza and Michael Mordino led the investigation and took part in the arrest. They were assisted by Detectives Noreen Walsh and Mary Evans, in addition to Niagara Falls police.
