BPD Make Arrest in Attempted Murder Case

Buffalo Police arrested a woman early Monday evening in connection with an early morning fire, in which a man was critically injured. An ambulance was summoned at about 6AM, to a house in the 100 block of Woodlawn Ave., for a burn victim. Looking into the circumstances of the injuries from an intentionally set fire led Northeast District Lieutenant Karen Healy and Officers Barbara Lark and Leona Flowers to request the homicide squad's assistance in furthering the investigation.

Police have charged 36 year old Victoria Betts of 111 Woodlawn Ave. (lower) with attempted murder in the second degree, as well as assault in the first degree and arson in the fifth degree. The victim, 46 year old Darrell Berg, was listed in critical condition at the Erie County Medical Center's burn treatment unit, with burns over forty percent of his body.

The victim's wounds were apparently inflicted when Ms. Betts poured rubbing alcohol on him, and ignited it with a lighter.

Leading the investigation was Sgt. David Lillis and Detectives Noreen Walsh, Michael Mordino, Michael Acquino and Patrick Judge. They were assisted by Fire Marshal James O'Neil from the Buffalo Fire Department's fire investigation unit.
